Choosing A Top
Maple Butcher Block — This is a great all-purpose top that can handle extreme surface abuse. First, it is kiln dried, and the edge is grain laminated for strength. Next it is glued, electronically cured and sanded smooth. Lastly, the maple is finished with a penetrating oil and sealed in a high quality catalyzed varnish.
Plastic Laminate — Super strong and easy to clean. High pressure plastic laminate-faced wood core can handle heavy abuse and provides a smooth, tough working surface for many applications. A cost effective choice.
Tempcore — Protects against static build up, and is chip, dent and warp resistant. Both sides are covered with a 3/16" thick, high grade hardboard. The core is constructed of a 45 lb. density particleboard blended with clear lumber, which is then sanded smooth and sealed.

TIP:
WARPING
Warpage of butcher block occasionally occurs if one surface expands at a greater rate than the other side. Since the moisture content of the wood used in producing butcher block counter tops is tightly controlled, a warped top can be easily corrected. Placing the block onto your cabinet base, it can be drawn down to a flat condition by using 3 or 4 bolts across the width.
On an oiled butcher block top, the warped condition can also be corrected by covering the
convex side with "mystery oil"
** and plastic, and then rubbing the oil onto the concave side of the board repeatedly. Leave last coat on overnight. This evens out the moisture content of the counter top, and will bring it back to its original flat condition.
** Any food-grade mineral or linseed oil should also work.
